What is storytelling school, exactly?
Think of it as School of Rock for storytellers. Instead of teaching kids how to play music like their favorite bands, we teach kids how to tell stories like their favorite movies and shows, like Star Wars, Toy Story, or Stranger Things.
If you don't know School of Rock, think of storytelling school as a travel sports team for kids who dream more about Harry Potter than LeBron James. Instead of teaching kids offense and defense, we teach them how their favorite movies and TV shows work. We'll show them how to create memorable characters like Buzz Lightyear, or T'Challa from Black Panther, or Eleven from Stranger Things. At the end of the semester your child will stand in front of a live audience and tell a new, original story, created from his or her own imagination, supported by a troupe of fellow storytellers.
At Written Out Loud, we believe that storytelling is a skill that kids will use for the rest of their lives, whether they become writers, doctors, firemen, or parents. Telling a strong, powerful story isn't easy. We've all seen the impact a powerful storyteller can make, in our work, our homes, and our places of worship. Good storytellers make a deep and lasting impression wherever they go in life. At Written Out Loud, we want your child to start learning professional storytelling skills right now, and gaining the confidence that comes with practice, performance, and success. And amazingly, the lessons are all right there in front of them, buried inside the shows, books, and movies they already love.
Written Out Loud storytelling school is led by the husband and wife team of Joshua and Jennifer Shelov: Joshua is an Emmy-winning screenwriter and filmmaker who has made multiple films in Hollywood and for every major broadcast network and streaming service. Jennifer has been a teacher and educator in both public and private schools for over 25 years. They have three children. Together, they developed the Written Out Loud curriculum by combining their backgrounds, observations, and expertise.
Classes will be held once a week in both Bridgeport and Chicago, with classes coming soon to New York, New Jersey, and Los Angeles - but even if you don't live in one of those areas, don't hesitate to sign up anyway. We're working on a way to make the school accessible to everyone, anywhere and everywhere. So whether you're in Connecticut or LA or Kentucky or London, please sign up, and pass this on to your friends! If there's enough interest in a certain location, we'll try our best to launch a course there.
